Subject: [*] ChunkJoiner 1.0.3
ChunkJoiner is a small utility that lets you join (concatenate)
any number of files in a single chunk. To use it, simply select
the files you want to join, and drag&drop them onto ChunkJoiner.
You will be asked the "type" and "creator" for the newly
created file. You will be also asked for the name of the
application which can open the resulting file; I have added
this because the Finder 7.x can read this name and show it
to the user if the application is not present.
ChunkJoiner works on any Macintosh, but it
**requires** System 7 or later.
Life is easier with a drag&drop interface.
New in 1.0.3:
A nifty registration form.
New in 1.0.2:
Corrected the check box misinforming that the files are deleted
after joining: the files are actually deleted **while** the
joining is in progress. Read the enclosed note for details.
Enjoy yourself and remember the $5 shareware fee!

This is a ClarisWorks 2.0 database template for processing QCat v1.4.3
produced
text files. QCat is a utility for cataloging diskettes, hard disks, and
removables by Richard De Luca.
The ClarisWorks database provides more functionality than De Luca's HyperCard
stacks and features document specific buttons for common operations (very
handy
feature of CW2.0) and color.

Subject: [*] ColorSwitch v2.2
Version 2.2 fixes bugs which causes the screen to flash upon opening the
control panel. Version 2.2 also sports a new volume control feature to
change the volume of your mac as easily as you can change your color depth.
ColorSwitch is a Control Panel that allows you to effortlessly switch
between the available color modes of any attached monitors. Instead of the
inconvenience of using the Monitors Control Panel every time you want to
switch between color modes, you can simply hold down the ColorSwitch
modifier keys and click anywhere on the monitor you want to change. A menu
will pop up listing the available color modes for the monitor you clicked
on; just select the color mode you want and ColorSwitch will acquiesce.
Under System 7 or later, things are even easier: ColorSwitch installs a
Monitor icon-menu next to the Balloon Help menu, from which you can simply
choose the color mode you desire for your main monitor.
ColorSwitch comes in very handy for many day-to-day tasks. Certain
programs require that your monitor be set to a certain color mode in order
to run, and using the Monitors control panel every time you need to switch
color modes grows tiresome quickly. Your Macintosh will also operate more
quickly if you normally operate in black and white mode, switching to a
more colorful setting only when you need to. ColorSwitch makes switching
color modes so quick and convenient, you will find yourself using it
constantly to improve your quality of life at the computer.
Once installed, ColorSwitch uses up 5K of memory.

Subject: [*] Disinfectant 3.3
Disinfectant 3.3
November 5, 1993
Disinfectant 3.3 is a new release of our free Macintosh anti-viral utility.
Version 3.3 detects the new CODE 1 virus and a minor new strain of the MBDF
virus.
The CODE 1 virus was discovered at several colleges and universities on the
east coast of the United States. It infects both applications and the
System file. It does not infect document files. It spreads under both
System 6 and System 7.
The CODE 1 virus renames the system hard drive to "Trent Saburo" whenever
an infected Mac is restarted on any October 31. Although the virus does not
contain any other intentionally destructive code, it can cause crashes and
other problems.
The new B strain of the MBDF virus was discovered in Florida. There are no
significant differences between the new strain and the original MBDF virus.
This version also includes a new color icon suite. Thanks to John Stein for
contributing the icons. If you don't see the new color icons on your color
monitor, try rebuilding your desktop file.
Under System 7, the new version stores its preferences file inside the
Preferences folder instead of inside the System folder proper. The first
time you run the new version, it moves your old preferences file from the
System folder into the Preferences folder for you.
The new version also fixes an error which caused Disinfectant to crash on
very rare kinds of damaged resource files.

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 2.1
Disk Charmer 2.1 is a neat utility that lets you conveniently
initialize (or verify) floppy disks.
It _requires_ at least System 7 to run.
It has a nice, modeless interface.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
It supports drag&drop (with the required Apple Events).
It is able to create larger disks: you gain 8.5K on a 800K disk,
18.5K on a HD disk (if you keep one large file filling the disk,
such as a Compact Pro segment).
It is the first disk formatter supporting the handy "Undo" feature
we all know and love.
It is the first disk formatter able to initialize and verify disks
(hold your breath) **in background**. To access this feature, you need
the Thread Manager Extension from Apple Computer.
It has even more features... but I am sure you are already impressed!
New from version 2.0.8 (the archives never saw 2.0.8, I think):
Lets you choose whether to lock out bad sectors or not;
now the first part of the bad sectors search phase can execute
concurrently with other applications, provided that you have the
Thread Manager installed.
New from version 2.0.7:
Alerts if you try using a floppy disk with open files on it;
fixed a problem with the about box, and its incompatibility with
AutoMenus II;
no more pauses between initializing and verifying (this only occurred
on some Mac models and when the Thread Manager was not installed);
a nifty registration form;
and other fixes (see the documentation for more info).
Enjoy yourself and remember the shareware fee!

This is a graphic notebook I developed (mostly) in a couple evenings. The
notebook has features I hope you will find useful:
% layouts for both text and graphics
% clear, consistent interface
% predefined layout for hardcopy (suitable for 3-ring binders)
% keyword entry (select the word, then click Paste Keyword)
% colorful, yet appears nice on b&w machines
% not password protected
I developed this for my own use. However, a client firm saw me using a form of
this database (for an unrelated project) and then had me extend it for
tracking bug reports in their R&D group.

Subject: [*] Forward Delete 1.1
Forward Delete is a small extension that lets you use that
mysterious key called forward delete, present on all Extended
Keyboards. Press this key to delete the character at the right
of the insertion point.
You can now obtain the same effect by pressing shift-delete.
Moreover, it lets you delete words with the Apple-approved
combinations option-backspace and option-fwd del.
It works with every application using
TextEdit (if you do not know what TextEdit is, do not
worry: it is simply that part of the Mac Operating System which
manages basic text editing). Try it out with TeachText or in
dialog boxes.
I have been using it since 1992 (!) with no problems or
incompatibilities at all.
If you install this utility, you will find yourself using it
more frequently, even in programs which have always supported
it! The miracles of consistency between applications...
This works even on a Plus under System 4.3,
and (hopefully) under System 6 & 7 on any other Mac.
New in 1.1:
shift-delete now works as forward delete - useful on EVERY
keyboard.
This utility is FREE! Enjoy yourself!

I will authorize the posting of the MacTCP 2.0.4 updater files to other
systems on two conditions:
1. Only the updaters (2.0 -> 2.0.4 and 2.0.2 -> 2.0.4) are posted. No

2. Both the read_me and the release_notes are ALWAYS posted along with the

3DView is a direct port of a program I wrote to do volume rendering
of data obtained from the Bio-Rad series of confocal microscopes. It
features a variety of rendering methods as well as the ability to
interpolate floating point values between planes during rendering
(for example it can fit 2.3 pixel planes between image planes.) I
have included a stereo pair (made in NIH Image) as a demonstration.
The program is probably too slow on a Mac to be very practical, but

Subject: [*] Oracle v2.0.2
Version 2.0.2 fixes a bug that causes the color to flash upon opening the
control panel.
Oracle is a Control Panel that you place into your System Folder. Oracle
will present you with a random thoughtful quotation each time you start up
your computer or once a day, whichever you specify.
Oracle also allows you to print out any quotations that you find of
particular interest, for later contemplation. This could perhaps be your
most practical program for your Macintosh, because it helps to perfect the
most important part of your computer system: you.
Oracle has a library of over 1,000 profound readings, which accounts for
its large size. Although it takes up a fair amount of disk space, Oracle
uses very little system memory (around 5K), and works on any machine under
System 6.0 or later (yes, it is System 7.0 friendly).

As part of Symantec's commitment to virus protection, it is our responsibility

When an infected Macintosh is rebooted on October 31, the virus renames the
hard disk. Because of the way CODE-1 alters the system, the virus may cause
crashes. The second virus, named MBDF B, is a variant of MBDF A. It does not
intentionally cause any damage but may be responsible for erratic system
behavior and crashes.

I will always remember the first time I took a Purity Test. I found it on

decided to hunt through the Internet and see if I could dig up a copy and
relive some old memories. Boy was I suprised, there were so many versions
and files I did not know what to do! After hunting through almot all off
them I found what seemed the be the most recent final release of one. It
is by far the best (allbeit long) of the Purity Tests. The only problem
was lack of formatting and a few errors. So, I cleaned it up, removed the
errors, formatted it, added a Table of Contents, and saved it to a
PostScript file (so any platform could print it) to be printed by anyone
who would like a copy of this classic.
The enclosed file is a Stuffed & BinHexed PostScript file. Other forms the
Purity Test are available upon request for those without a PostScript

format, but if there are enough requests I might consider it.

About ViewIt Shareware Version 2.2
A shareware version of ViewIt(TM) is being made available to the Macintosh
programming community as a way of introducing ViewIt and other programming
modules from FaceWare. ViewIt is one of the best Mac programming tools
available for creating powerful windows containing many views and custom
controls. In addition to ViewIt, this package includes a complete list and
description of other, non-shareware FaceWare modules that support advanced
custom controls, animation, communications, scripting, database management,
QuickDraw(TM) extensions, and plotting. FaceWare modules are reasonably
priced, do not require license fees, are compatible with all major languages
and compilers, and are called using a simple C function, Pascal procedure,
or Fortran subroutine (a HyperCard(R) interface is also available).
ViewIt consists of a powerful set of programming modules that help programmers
manage menus, windows, and other elements of the Macintosh interface in new or
existing programs. ViewIt is uniquely designed to be much easier to use than
other "interface builders" by requiring a minimal amount of program code (as
little as 3 lines!), and supporting the on-line editing of windows from within
running programs (like HyperCard). The combination of ViewIt plus Apple's
ResEdit(TM) or other resource editor can be used in place of tools such as
MacApp(R) and AppMaker(TM), or as an enhancement of such tools. When you
decide to purchase ViewIt, the price is just $95.
ViewIt's major window-related features include:
-- support for editing modal, modeless, and floating windows from within
running programs
-- multiple fonts, styles, and colors (w/o the limitations of standard ictb
resources)
-- a variety of useful custom controls (lists, menus, ICON/PICT buttons, etc.)
-- support for extended controls that can be as powerful as complete graphic
and text editors
-- a view hierarchy that supports scrolling and paging of groups of controls
-- direct links between program variables and control values
-- ability to override all control behavior
-- compatibility with existing CDEFs
-- imports existing dialog DITL resources
-- support for System 7 Balloon Help
The ViewIt package also includes a module that can be used to support standard
items in the main menu bar, tear-off menus, floating palettes, and the
required
Apple events.
The complete text of an objective, professional review of ViewIt that appeared
in the Nov/Dec 92 issue of MacTutor is included in the ViewIt demo program,
along with comments from a wide range of programmers who are currently using
ViewIt.

About DD v4.0, purchasers of SD v1.0 can call the toll free number

I thought that by upgrading to SD v1.0, I already *was* in the

Because they think they can "save" a few bucks? That can't be,
WATS lines cost significant money to a company. Let alone my time.
(It was *my* choice to call. Some won't bother; then they don't get

This could be the culprit. I just wrote a big message about how I binhex
my files with Drop*Stuff and then attach the TEXT file to my message so it
couldn't be the MIME stuff. Then I thought I should check my facts. Well,
there was an old checkbox in the Settings dialog that told Eudora whether
or not to Binhex TEXT files. I looked for it, but it's gone. Now there's
a new checkbox that I hadn't noticed called "Send Attachements: Always As
Mac Documents". Balloon help claims that this turns MIME on and off. I
had it on. I've turned it off.
I'm not certain this will help though. I've had trouble downloading files
people have sent me. I get corruption problems and Eudora offers to try
again or leave the file. I leave it and download it manually with YModem
and it's fine. This makes me think that my connection via the Apple Modem
Tool is losing or mangling data. I'm using a Teleport Gold and Apple Modem
Tool 1.1.1 and 1.5. I notice some minor noise on the line when I connect to
Netcom for netnews, so this implies that Eudora isn't handling line noise
worth shit. I've tried going for the reliable connection but that doesn't
seem to work either. I'm running out of things to try.

Apple has a database of solutions for the disabled. I searched for
"Braille" and got the following replies. What exactly do you mean by a
Braille keyboard?
Kee@aol.com
++++++++++++++++++++++
Braille embossers are printers that print embossed Braille instead of
English words. Most braillers are connected easily to the Macintosh, and
are able to print documents created with any word processing program.
Before the Braille text is printed, however, it must first be translated
>From ASCII (a standard computer format used by word processing software
programs) into Grade II Braille. This is accomplished using a software
translation program called the "Braille Translator" from Duxbury Systems (a
description of this product is in this area of MDR). Once the text has been
translated, it can be sent by the Macintosh to the Braille printer for
embossing. Some braillers have built-in translation capacity, eliminating
the need for separate translation software. Embossers vary in speed, with
the faster ones generally being more expensive. Some Braille embossers are
quieter than others, and some have the ability to emboss Braille characters
on both sides of the paper (called interpoint). Others can print Braille
and English on the same page. Many Braille printers are large, heavy
machines, but some come in compact, portable cases. The list is neither
comprehensive nor does it represent an endorsement of any kind.

is avalible free from me. The Braille 'n Speak work great my wife and I use

Subject: Color output on black & white printer using GIFConverter (Trick)
Here is a trick for owners of a black-and-white printer, who want to make a
color printout occasionally.
Sometimes I want to produce a color print with my Macintosh. Not often
enough to invest in a color printer, but only in special cases. I found a
good solution to create color printouts using a Hewlett-Packard DeskJet
printer (left over from the time before I had a Mac, but I think the same
procedure will work with Hewlett-Packards DeskWriter series of printers).
It may work also on other printers (StyleWriter etc.), depending on whether
you can get colored ink or ribbon, and what the paper feeding accuracy of
your printer is.
To create a color printout I use Kevin Mitchell's GIFConverter to create
four color separations from the color pictures, by selecting "One Bit" and
the appropriate color from the Display menu. Then I print these color
separations on my DeskJet, using a yellow, magenta, cyan or black print
cartridges. Officially, these colored print cartridges do not exist for the
DeskJet series, but the cartridges for the PaintJet XL300 can be used (like
the HP 51639Y yellow cartridge).
Of course, this means that I have to switch the print cartridges 4 times,
and the same sheet of paper must be fed four times through the printer,
which makes this procedure too complicated for mass production of color
prints, but is works fine for these special occasions where you want to
have a color print.
Note 1: the result depends very much on the kind of paper that is used. I
got very good results with the special paper for color inkjet printers.
Note 2: if you want to try out this trick, make certain that you have some
kind of storage container for the ink cartridges - you will have 4 ink
cartridges in use. Storing them without using a special container will
cause the ink to clog. Maybe you can obtain container from the companies
that sell refill sets.
Note 3: I think that the PaintJet cartridges can only be used by
DeskJet/DeskWriter printers that can accept the old single-capacity
cartridges. I am not certain that these cartridges will fit it the most
recent series of HP printers.

Having been bitching on Info-Mac about Quicken 4.0 and Intuit's
inadequate technical support, I realized that the "good guys" rarely
get the credit they deserve. So, a small attempt to correct this
oversight:
I recently purchase my first PowerBook (a 165) and was in the market
for a utility package. I decided on CPU 2.0 - primarily because it
included file synchronization software. To keep the story short,
my first attempt to synchronized the PB to the desktop Mac resulted in
a wondrous crash of my PB. #@*. I dialed AOL, e-mailed Connectix
(who maintain a support forum on-line) with a description of my problem
and a _brief_ description of what else I had on the PB. Within 24
hours I receive a reply which identified the problem as a conflict between
CPU 2.0 and Norton's Directory Assistant II. I was advised to
remove the Norton's extension and, pesto, file synchronization worked
like a charm.
End of story? No. Within the week, I received an update of CPU 2.0
which corrected the conflict with Directory Assistant II.
Way to go Connectix!! Keep this up and your in danger of having a
customer for life. Too bad they don't publish an Investment Management
program.
ps I highly recommend CPU 2.0 - a fine PB utility.

it to maximize the Mac partition size? Since Apple makes big drives it must
be capable of doing this but apparently the mod to the utility doesn't
bypass something that it need to. BTW, I tried partitioning and then going
into custom but it wouldn't let me grow the Mac partion, just move it.

Subject: Internet access for Mac through VAX VMS & Multinet
I would like to enter the wonderful world of Eudora and Mosaic and all the
other goodies I hear you all talk about. I would like to do this using my
Macintosh. I have a Quadra 700 at home that is not networked. It is running
standard System 7.1 (w/hardware update 2.01).
My only Internet access is at work. We have a VAX cluster that runs VMS and
has relatively complete VMS access to the Internet through a program called
MULTINET. By typing 'telnet' or 'ftp' or 'finger' at the standard '$'
prompt, I can get to most everywhere I want to get and can successfully
transfer ascii and binary files. And I can send and receive mail through the
regular VMS MAIL facility using SMTP. I call in to work using a typical 14.4
kbps modem and use White Pine's Mac340 terminal program. I also have TCP in
my system folder, but it doesn't get used. Running 'network' programs that
require TCP always resutls in some kind of error.
What can I do? I've heard that I can create a SLIP connection, but I need
software for the VAX as well as the Mac. My VAX system administrator doesn't
take kindly to supporting Macs (or call-in PCs, I guess), so SLIP just draws
a blank stare.
Is there any way I can surf the Internet with all these cool Mac programs
using what I've got? Can I grab a SLIP server from some ftp site and then
run it myself on my VAX account? Or do anything else?
Thanks in advance for any information!
An aside...
{We run DEC Pathworks at work, and access to our VAX cluster is through
standard PCs running Windows 3.1. Both the VAX and PCs are set up for
Pathworks, but they haven't installed the Mac-compatible Pathworks on the
VAX. We use KeaTERM 340 software on the PCs and connect to the VAX cluster
using Digital's LAT protocol. The CTERM protocol should be available too, but
it doesn't seem to work for me. Can anybody think of a way to run the
Windows equivalent of all the neat Mac programs like Eudora and Mosaic across
my network out to the Internet? This would be a consolation prize if the Mac
connection isn't possible.}

I am a frequent user of the info-mac archive. I applaud your recent

My suggestion for the moderator-wish-list is a abstract viewer/sorter. I
would
download the abstracts on a regular basis, and use my preselected criteria to

to my needs.
I currently use very basic text searches (grep) to scan the abstracts, but
this is very time consuming and manual. It certainly does not take advantage

Perhaps an extension to the Easy View program used with TidBITS and your

Hallo, everybody!
I was wondering some things about A/UX (Apple Unix), specifically:
- What system is it based on (SYSV or BSD4.2 or BSD4.3?)
- How much disk space is requires for a MINIMAL installation
- How much for a USABLE installation (with X-windows)
- Does it work on PowerBooks (specifically, a 170). If so, in what way
is the system restricted (such as PowerBook power management features
maybe not being available under UNIX).
- Can the system be made "dual bootable", so that I could choose whether
To boot as System 7.1 or UNIX?
Thanks!

Today I removed the latest sound manager (3.0) and replaced it with the

Has anyone else noticed this? Anyone know how to fix this? I assume using

I met someone studying court stenography that I knew. Stenography, I
commented, isn't that old fashioned, don't people use dictaphones? No, she
said. Court stenographers have, in fact, the important duty of preventing
voiceovers so that they can get it down sequentially, a dictaphone can not
do that.
Someone at our local infomart tried steno on the newton and found that
it wasn't recognized but stayed as memory hogging digital ink.
So, here is something remarkably missing from the Newton as far as I
know, handwriting recognition into the stenographers font. I wonder how
easy it is to generalize the trainer to train to other fonts. Have I
reassured a remarkable new market base or am I missing something fundamental
about steno?
I would be most greatful for any ideas public or privately e mailed.

I think all yearbooks are glossy. Maybe its a federal regulation ? :-)
>what resolutions and bit depths will i need to scan in photographs at?
YES! Someone finally asked this question BEFORE bringing the job to
the service bureau. Here is the Official Service Bureau party line:
Bit depth: everything you can get, which is just 8 bit for greyscale.
Res: scan at twice the halftone screen frequency. What's that, you say?
It is the spacing of the tiny black dots that make up a printed halftone
photo. It's the only good way to render grey shades with just black
ink and white paper. They vary the size of the uniformly spaced dots
to create a good illusion of greys. Different printing presses permit
different screen frequencies. They are stated in Lines Per Inch. You can
ask the printer who will do your yearbook. Typical values for greyscale
work are 120, 133, or 150 LPI up to 175 LPI. If you cant reach the printer,
a 300 dpi scan should cover most uses.
>will the output from the HP 4M be high enough quality to give to the
>yearbook and look nice when published?
Mmmmm. Close bu maybe not quite. Okay for mechanical artwork and graphics
but it may lack subtlety for the photos. Try printing some photos and see
if the results satisfy you. You're better off going for the imagesetter.
You can get higher screen frequencies as well as more shades of grey.
It's a lot of work getting the files to them, but one page does not
cost much. It's worth it for a photo that a lot of people you know
will look at for years to come.
>if not, do i need to find a proffessional service bureau, and what kind of
>file do i need to give them?
You arrange this with the service bureau. Some will take a Quark file
provided you also supply all placed external files (your scans, EPS
files you added, etc.) and that you pre-arrange what fonts you use
to ensure they have them. Others will only take PostScript files.
You create this with the Print command option "Disk File". This
gives you the biggest version of your output, since it loads the
mac printer driver, all the fonts, and the scans into one big file.
But at least it is ready to run. But be sure you set ALL the options
in the print settings the correct way. You may need to get a PDX
printer driver for the imagesetter to load into Quark. This allows
you to select that as your printer type. Then you must set all the
imagesetter numbers, like Lines Per Inch, resolution 1200 (e.g.),
page (image) size, and others. Lots of things to go wrong.
I really prefer getting the Quark file so we can tinker with all these
settings ourselves, as well as fixing any problems within the file
that may turn up.
>theres an AV department on campus with an image setter, but they told me
>they will only accept TIFF files that fit on one floppy or syquest and they
>won't take segmented files. I suspect my page will be too big for that.(i
>don't have a syquest).
Oooh, stuffy, aren't they? I know it can be a lot of work to re-assemble
split files, but who do they work for?
Yes, with photos you'll have trouble getting your files to them by floppy.
Maybe you could borrow a syquest drive long enough to produce your output.
Sure you can't reach them over a campus network? Or by modem? Lots
of service bureaus offer a "bulletin board" for submitting jobs. You
still need to talk in person with them about job specs and what you
want (and prices :-) Often we arrange a "dry run" with limited size
files to see how the client has set up, but with a one page job
you may not be able to arrange this. Also some service bureaus
will do the scanning for you and provide you with a low res "FPO"
for position only version of your scans. You place these, and submit
the file. Their computer (or their operator) swaps the high res scans
before output. They can often do fine quality work on your photos,
getting lots of fine shading, but they charge extra for this service.
If you can't work out imagesetting, consider doing the lasers at 200%
and having the printer shoot them down 2 to 1 on their camera. That
gives you an effective resolution of 1200 dpi, like a basic imagesetter.
Just be sure the lasers can be assembled straight after the output
gets tiled on two pages. How? Include crop marks. The printer will
know what to do. Discuss this with them in advance.
You can dry-run this method by printing at 200% and then reducing on
a really good photocopier (though I dont think many photocopiers can
reproduce 1200dpi...) Be sure you half the required LPI when
printing at 200%. Thus, if your printer wants 150 LPI, print
at 75 LPI at 200%. This keeps you within the range of the 600
dpi printer. 600/75 = 8 device pixels across each halftone cell.
An 8 x 8 halftone cell offers 64 sizes of dot plus white for
a total of 65 shades. Better to go lower such as 60 LPI at 200%
getting you 101 shades. The final output becomes 120 LPI. You
will find that more grey shades is preferable to a finer screen
with fewer shades. Maybe even go to 50 LPI for 145 shades
(600/50 = 12, 12^2 +1 = 145). Use the formula
DPI/LPI ^ 2 + 1 = grey levels
and keep the number of grey levels as high as you can. If you
go to fewer greys, the photos will get "posterized", where large
areas are all the same grey and the transitions stand out
too sharply.
P.S.: professional has only one 'f'. Thank you.

There appear to be two categories of Quicken 4.0 users:
1) Those who use it as a ersatz checkbook and know it's perfect,
and
2) Those who use the whole program and know better.
This is addressed only to the second group (the first apparently do not
need bug fixes and have no interest in getting what they paid for).
***********FOR USERS OF THE ENTIRE QUICKEN PROGRAM ONLY***********
In one of those remarkable coincidence (you know, the type that gives
you faith that Elvis is still sucking down barbecue in one of 'em
U&FOs), the day after my last post (and six weeks after I started trying
to obtain it) I received Maintenance Release 4 for Quicken 4.0 from
Intuit. (Actually, I received it twice - in the same envelope - go
figure.) Or at least I _believe_ it is Release 4. Neither the disk
label nor the program indicates the Release version number anywhere that
I can find it - including using ResEdit to examine the vers resource.
Talk about stealth upgrades! The creation date for this version of
Quicken 4.0 is 9/16/93 - is that the only clue to what Maintenance
Release I have? If your program doesn't have _at least_ this date, I
would advise you to contact Intuit immediately - that way you should
receive the bug fixes in time for Christmas.
So does Maintenance Release 4 fix all the bugs in Quicken 4.0? Much too
soon to tell (although John Antolak's post in the last Info-Mac does not
give me much hope), I'll let you know after I've given it a workout for
about a month. It does appear to be faster at certain tasks but this
may just be my perception.
Maintenance Release 4 _does_ fix the bug I described in my last post.
And do you know how Intuit fixed it? They _removed_ the feature! Now
you can't have Quicken include unrealized gains/losses in an
Income/Expense Report. But at least it doesn't crash anymore when you
run an Income/Expense Report _after_ you've run an Investment Report
with unrealized gains/losses. Maybe Intuit will continue to squash bugs
in this manner and we'll end up with a perfect program - Quicken 3.0.
For those who continue to have problems with the Investment Manager
(yeah, I know some of you with perfect Quicken 4.0 checkbooks are
reading this), I'll post to Info-Mac if anything useful shows up in the
new Intuit forum on AOL and you, in turn, can do all of us using the
Investment Manager a favor by letting Scott Cook know about the problems

You know, this could easily be operator error. Some people configure their
mail client to automatically close a window when the message in it is sent,
some do not. My experience is that when the window of a sent message stays
open, people tend to forget whether they sent it or not and just in case
they did not, they send it again and then close it. So it might not be the

It occurs to me that the Iomega Floptical is a much better replacement
value than any superdrive for most people. It offers 1.44mb (MFM) floppy
read/write in IBM/Mac formats and also offers 21mb second generation
Floptical access for only about $150 more than a SD. The 21mb discs are $20
retail. It would be nice if they read 800k too. Oh well.
The Apple catalog offers both at retail (read Apple) prices. I do not
know if internal versions are readily available, but if so, then do it. I
also wonder if their offering Flopticals through the Apple catalog is a
preview of things to come for upper end PowerPC Macs. It would be really
nice and worth the $.
Circuit City offers the Performa 475 (68040LC-25 LC) bundled with
monitor, fax/modem, applicatons and 4/160mb for under $1600. The
PC-clone replacement wave has begun.

Yeah, I know it's a strong statement in all caps, but I believe it. Worse,

LAME LAME!
It is poorly written, has a bad interface, sucks raw eggs and worse yet, it
is STUPID! My cat can beat it. It certainly never even gave my wife a

waste your money on.
Crab is the Scrabble game of choice.
I saw Crab come across Sumex and promptly snagged a copy. The readme

(Scientific American perhaps?). I gave it to my wife. She was impressed.
She's a good Scrabble player and this game promptly whipped her. Then she
got serious and can beat it more often then it beats her. She still plays
it when she needs to give her Tetris fingers a rest. ;)
At any rate, it is obvious which program was written for love and which was
written for money. Guess which one is better. Screw the OFFICIAL version.
They don't care. They just want your money.

PS
The excellent Mille Bornes game that has been around for a while was
stomped on by Parker Brothers. They would have been better off buying it.
If they could, they would give us another piece of crap like Scrabble.
When will they learn? Software is art, not just business.

SPECmarks (SPEC is an acronym, I cannot recall the full name, but the C
is for commitee) are one of the better methods of benchmarking processor
speeds (certainly when compared to clock speed, MIPS or FLOPS). There
are actually two SPECmarks in use since 1992. The SPECfp92 is for
floating point performance, the SPECint92 for integer.
Each benchmark consists of a suite of test programs which are licensed
>From SPEC. There are five or six programs in each suite, and the two
final marks are the geometric means of the scores from the programs.
As an example, a Sun SPARCstation II, IPC, IPX ... has a SPECfp92 rating
of 21.5, while a DEC 3000 series 300AXP (one of the alpha processor
machines (and just incidentally the machine I use for serious work, I
have a Quadra 840av for messing around :-P )) has a SPECfp92 rating of
91. These are dimensionless quantities, and in most cases the SPECint92
ratings seem to be smaller than the fp by a factor of about 1/3.
I would guess that my 840 only runs at a tenth of the speed of my alpha,
but I have not really tried comparing them, so I could be wrong.
The thought of the abominations MicroSloth might be tempted to produce,
knowing that they have the power of 400 SPECfp92marks in which to run them
gives me screaming nightmares.

Starnine are bringing out an pop3 receive and smtp send MASAM towards the
end of the year.
david@starnine.com should bring you more info.
If any one knows of a smtp receives masm that would be very interesting.

Subject: System 7.1 commerical, but not 7.xx
True, System 7.1 is a commerical product. But, your statement:
"In fact, any version of System 7.xx is commercial software"...is not true.
Apple made the system software strictly commerical with 7.1. 7.0 and 7.0.1
(and all of the updaters for it) are available from ftp.apple.com and have
been since they came out.
Granted, you can pay for System 7.0 and 7.0.1, but when you buy it like that
you're really paying for the manuals.

Subject: Trash problem
Does anyone have system problems, like apps not opening properly or weird
type 1 errors when the trash gets too big? Mine was 15 MB, about 200+
files and my system was acting really odd. When I emptied it, things
cleared up. Norton Disk Doctor said that my disk was fine before and after
I emptied the trash. Any help on this one?

Rick Phillips asks:
>Can someone help me get into the umich archives?
>Correct me if I am wrong. I think the address is umich.edu

Use mac.archive.umich.edu to FTP to the Umich/Merit archives. You will
get a login failure when the load is too high (all too often).
Use gopher.archive.merit.edu to Gopher to the Umich/Merit archives.
This machine is not yet overloaded (but probably will be after everyone
reads this!). The Gopher menus in the mac archives are enhanced to
show file size and date, and are best viewed with a mono-spaced font
(like monaco) so that things line up properly.

Subject: WordPerfect
I was at the MacWorld show in Sydney Australia this week and tried out
WordPerfect with World Script and Hebrew.
WordPerfect, in its current incarnation, cannot deal with right-to-left
text entry properly. I therefore strongly suggest that those people with a
need for a right-to-left word-processor stick with Nisus which seems to be
the best product around.
